Massage Therapy for Fibromyalgia Relief Massage
Some mornings your whole body aches before you've done anything to earn it, and sleep didn't help the way sleep is supposed to. You've probably explained that to people who nodded without understanding any of it. Massage sounds appealing until you weigh an hour of relief against the risk of several difficult days afterward. I'm Geri León, a board certified massage therapist based in Castro Valley, and I work with clients across the East Bay who live with fibromyalgia.
Will Massage Make My Fibromyalgia Pain Worse?
Pressure that suits one of my other clients can be far too much for you, and that difference is the whole issue. Fibromyalgia involves a nervous system that amplifies ordinary sensation, so touch registers differently than it does in a body without the condition. Nothing about this session requires you to be brave. I start well under what you'd guess your limit is, and I add nothing without asking you first. You set the ceiling and I stay below it, and I'll check in more than once about where that ceiling sits.
How Do You Decide How Much Pressure to Use?
Soreness from pressure can outlast the pressure itself by days in a fibromyalgia body. A session that felt fine on my table isn't proof that the dose was right for you. So I work briefly in one area and return to it later rather than staying and pushing through. Working under your tolerance instead of at it is the difference between an easy week afterward and a hard one. I'll also ask how the last session landed before I decide anything about this one.
What Does the Hour Involve?
Most of the work is slow and broad rather than focused on any single sore spot. I use gentle sustained contact and unhurried passes that give your system time to settle rather than react. Warmth suits many people with this condition, so I'll ask whether you'd like heat included. You stay covered except for the area I'm working, and you keep whatever clothing helps you feel comfortable.
What Happens If I Arrive on a Bad Day?
Your body doesn't have to perform for an appointment you booked weeks ago. We rebuild the session around whatever you brought through the door that morning. That might mean changing how you're positioned on the table or shortening the hour. Some days we work only the areas where touch feels welcome and leave everything else alone. Stopping early is always available to you and you never have to explain the decision.
How Often Would I Come, and When Would I Notice Anything?
One appointment tells you about fit and tolerance more than it tells you about relief. A run of weekly sessions across several weeks is where people tend to notice change in how they feel. That change usually arrives as easier movement and a steadier mood before it arrives as less pain. I'd rather set that expectation now than have you judge this work by a single visit.
Does This Replace What My Doctor Has Me Doing?
Massage sits alongside your medical care rather than in place of it. I don't diagnose anything and I don't advise on medication or treatment. What I want to hear is what your physician has told you, so the session fits inside that plan. Bring me any restrictions they've given you and I'll build around every one of them. Anything new or changing in your symptoms goes back to them rather than to me.
